Women in the south of Portugal know more vegetarians!

It was mostly women living in the south of Portugal and from the upper social classes that responded affirmatively to the question: "Do you know at least one person who follows an exclusively vegetarian diet?".

The question was asked in the most recent study conducted by Centro Vegetariano ,  in September 2017.

From those who responed, 39% indicated that they know at least one person following a vegetarian diet. Still this figure is considerably different based on the gender of the person interviewed.  34% of men responded affirmatively but the number for women was even greater at 43%.

There is also a clear predominance of those between 25 and 34 years old where almost half of those interviewed gave an affirmative answer. This figure droped to less than a third in those between 55 and 64. This shows that the younger generation are much more likely to know someone that is vegetarian.

Geographically, it is interesting to realise that more than half of those that responded know at least one person following a vegetarian diet.

In term of social classes, it also becomes clear that vegetarianism is more popular among upper classes, since there is a rise from 23% of affirmative answers in lower classes to more than 50%.

Sample and methodology

Nielsen’s study for CV used a stratified random sample. 2000 home interviews to individuals of both sexes aged between 15 to 65 years old living in mainland Portugal were conducted with an expected maximum margin error of +/- 2.2 for a degree of confidence of 95%. Such interviews were conducted in september 2017.
